Soldier gets recognition from Florida Everblades

February 28, 2006

By Justin Herndon

Lee County -

An army specialist recently back from Iraq received a hero's welcome Tuesday night.

Army Specialist Jesse Pond served a year in Iraq. One night on patrol the vehicle he was riding in was hit by an explosive. Somehow the soldier survived the blast with only minor injuries.

After the national anthem was played at Germain Arena, Pond got a standing ovation.. and a player from the team gave him an autographed jersey.

His parents and his son were present for an honor for a ceremony that he says shows the spirit of this community.

"I'm glad that they recognize what we do overseas and what we do for the country. I'm glad that they're giving back to us so it let's us know we're appreciated," Pond said.

He's from Michigan and stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He's in town because his parents have a house in Cape Coral.

Later this week he'll take part in fishing trip with Operation Open Arms - a group which provides soldiers a chance to catch up on events they missed while overseas.

Specialist Pond will be out of the Army in six weeks.

Jesse's parents also contacted us - their letter is included below:

Our son, Specialist Jesse Pond had the honor to participate in the Operation Open Arms program. After making contact with Captain John "GiddyUp" Bunch, he not only told us about the program but also made this his personal goal to achieve all Jesse's wishes.

We had a delightful lunch at the Farmers Market Restaurant on Monday. On Tuesday night the whole family was invited to attend the Florida Everblades Hockey game. Evan Maxwell provided Jesse with a presentation of a signed Everblades jersey and ringside seats at the game.

Wink news did a wonderful job with a TV interview of Jesse and what the Operation Open Arms program is all about. Wednesday was a great time at Fort Meyers beach. Paradise Parasailing gave Jesse a lift into the sunny sky while Erik Kellar for the Bonita Daily News took pictures. We couldn't ask for a better day on the beach.

Thursday Jesse took off on a fishing Charter with Captain David Dean from Family Tradition Charters for a fishing trip. Not only did he catch lots of spotted sea trout but Captain David also took him on a sight seeing trip of the gorgeous waters. Jim Griffiths from the Nautical Mile was on hand to take pictures of the event. After a pack filled week Jesse is headed back to Fort Riley in Kansas. We can't thank Captain John "GiddyUp" Bunch and all of the people involved with Operation Open Arms enough for giving their time and services to not only Jesse but all the other members of the service. This was a vacation of a lifetime.
